Conversion of a workshop into a residence in Vetrego<\/h3>\n

Restoring and Renovating Existing Buildings<\/h2>\n

This project involves the renovation and expansion of an existing building<\/strong>, originally used as an artisan workshop, located in Vetrego (Venice)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The project involved converting the building into a residence<\/strong> by improving the existing structure\u2019s energy efficiency and adding a wooden upper story to the existing structure<\/strong>, which will house the sleeping quarters.<\/p>\n

Artisanal buildings constructed between the 1960s and 1980s are often characterized by simple brick and reinforced concrete<\/strong> structures, with compact volumes and poor energy efficiency. However, precisely because of their structural simplicity, they lend themselves very well to renovation and expansion projects using lightweight construction technologies<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

Why Choose Wood for a Second-Story Addition<\/h2>\n

When renovating existing buildings, one of the main challenges is the weight of the new structures<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Wooden structures are a particularly effective solution because they offer:<\/p>\n

    much lighter<\/strong> than concrete or masonry<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Excellent structural and seismic resistance<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Thanks to these features, it was possible to construct the new addition without overloading the existing foundations<\/strong>, while at the same time improving the building\u2019s overall structural performance.<\/p>\n

    The project was developed according to criteria of architectural simplicity and functionality<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Today, the building features:<\/p>\n

      a main building with a rectangular floor plan<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      a wooden gable roof<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      An interior layout designed to clearly separate the living area from the sleeping area<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      The project maintained a compact and clean volume, allowing it to blend seamlessly with the surrounding built environment.<\/p>\n

      The new building has two stories.<\/p>\n

      Ground floor<\/h3>\n

      The ground floor is the result of the redevelopment of the former artisan workshop<\/strong>, which has been completely renovated in terms of:<\/p>\n

        distribution.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Adjacent to the building, a separate utility room<\/strong> has been created to house all the main systems:<\/p>\n

          domestic hot water storage<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

        • \n

          inertial reservoir<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

        • \n

          photovoltaic system inverter<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

          circulation pumps and control systems.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          First Floor \u2013 Wooden Addition<\/h3>\n

          The new wooden structure houses the sleeping area of the home<\/strong>, which consists of:<\/p>\n

            bedrooms<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

            bathrooms<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

          • \n

            laundromat.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            This solution allows you to naturally separate the different areas of the home<\/strong>, enhancing comfort and privacy.<\/p>\n

            Relationship to the Garden and Sun Exposure<\/h2>\n

            One of the key elements of the project is its direct connection to the garden and the surrounding landscape<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

            On the south side, a large sliding glass door<\/strong> has been installed, directly connecting the living area to the outdoor space.<\/p>\n

            The choice of focus is not random:<\/p>\n

              \n
            • \n

              The living area and kitchen face south<\/strong> to make the most of the natural light<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

            • \n

              The large windows allow you to enjoy the view of the greenery.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              On the south facade, a lightweight portico with a depth of less than 1.5 meters<\/strong> was also constructed; according to current zoning regulations, this does not count toward the building\u2019s volume<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

              \n

              Energy-Efficient Windows and Doors<\/h2>\n

              The windows and doors are made of high-performance laminated wood<\/strong> and feature double-pane glass with high thermal insulation.<\/p>\n

                high-efficiency double-pane glass<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

                To control summer sunlight, a system of adjustable exterior venetian blinds<\/strong> has been installed, which allows for the regulation of solar radiation and improves indoor comfort during the hottest months.<\/p>\n

                Thermal Insulation of the Building<\/h2>\n

                One of the project’s main goals was to bring the building up to contemporary energy standards<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

                Both the existing building and the addition have been clad with a thick layer of insulation:<\/p>\n

                  20 cm of rock wool insulation<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

                • \n

                  Internal lining with 5 cm of additional insulation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                  The total thickness of the new walls is approximately 38 cm<\/strong>, ensuring a high level of thermal and acoustic comfort.<\/p>\n

                  The addition is constructed using structural X-Lam panels<\/strong>, clad externally with insulation and internally with drywall.<\/p>\n

                  Integration into the context of the elevated building<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

                  Ventilated wooden roofing<\/h2>\n

                  The roof was constructed using a load-bearing structure of laminated wood<\/strong> and a high-performance insulation system.<\/p>\n

                    Exterior Finishes and Natural Materials<\/h2>\n

                    The facades were designed to blend in with the local surroundings.<\/p>\n

                      This combination of materials strikes a balance between tradition and modernity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

                      Energy Systems and Performance<\/h2>\n

                        Thanks to the quality of the building envelope and the generation of renewable energy, the home easily achieves energy class A4<\/strong>, coming close to passive house<\/strong> standards.<\/p>\n

                        The building is completely gas-free<\/strong>, resulting in CO\u2082 emissions that are virtually zero<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

                        Projects like this show how it is possible to transform existing, energy-inefficient buildings into modern, sustainable homes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
